About Galaxie Polaris
The design of Galaxie Polaris was quite literally a labour of love. I created the typeface for my then-fiancee, now-wife Tracy for use in her MFA thesis. (Design of the font commenced in 2002, with a couple of "false starts" which may find their way to market at some point in the future.) p>
Galaxie was always planned to be a large family of families, all designed to work together. Polaris is the first Galaxie typeface to be completed, with the script Cassiopeia released in 2006, and serif and egyptian faces in the pipeline. Polaris was named for the pole star, and is the reference point for the development of the rest of the families. p>
After we released Polaris in August 2004, I reviewed the typefaces and came to the conclusion that I could expand and improve them; I wasn't 100% happy with the OpenType features programming, and I felt that the collection of accented glyphs and special characters wasn't covering as many bases as I would have liked. There were also some glyphs I just wasn't happy with, especially at the heavier weights, which have been honed. The italics have also been considerably revised. p>
Type is a tool for delivering language; with Polaris, I set out to make a typeface that does this clearly and concisely, with the minimum of fuss. p>
