About Alexey
What started as a week-long exercise evolved into a type family in four weights. Rick Valicenti showed chester the masthead for "Portfolio" magazine and challenged him to create a complete font based on it for publication in the "Playground" section of thirstype.com. (Rick didn't initially reveal that "Portfolio" was An Alexey Brodovitch design from 1949.) Chester created three versions - Capitals, Alternate, and Unicase - in Extra Bold weight within a week, then started expanding the typeface, designing lowercase letters and extending the character set in three additional weights. p>
The font's construction is true to Brodovitch's drawing of the word "Portfolio": the construction and specific letter shapes were replicated. (For example, the R informed the design of the upper- and lowercase K.) Alexey wasn't just designed to look like a stencil font; it is a true stencil font whose large x-height gives it an industrial air. p>
